How Ferro-Clean provided safety products for the new Perth Airport train tunnel under the Swan River!

The Project

The new Perth Airport Line was officially opened yesterday, with the Prime Minister and WA Premier taking the inaugural journey on the $1.86 billion jointly funded project. The line is expected to carry around 20,000 passenger trips per day in its first year of operation.

Ferro-Clean contributed to the tunnel works, delivering high-quality, custom safety solutions designed for durability and visibility.

Since 1966, Ferro-Clean has specialised in protective coatings for safety-critical products across Western Australia, with a strong track record on major government-funded projects.

The Challenge

Ferro-Clean addressed a critical requirement on the METRONET project by applying a durable, non-slip protective coating to the safety walkway running alongside the track throughout the 8 km tunnel.

This walkway provides a secure evacuation path for passengers and crew in the event of a train stopping within the tunnel.

The anti-slip finish reduces the risk of slips and falls, while the protective coating system enhances durability, extending service life and protecting the structure in a harsh tunnel environment.

The Solution

To meet the client’s requirements, Ferro-Clean developed an innovative application process to ensure consistent coverage of both the non-slip material and protective coating system.

As part of this solution, a high-visibility yellow reflective strip was applied along the edge facing the rails, clearly visible to passengers travelling through the tunnel beneath the Swan River and Perth Airport.

All 9,000 panels were delivered on schedule and in full compliance with project specifications. When travelling through the Perth Airport Tunnel, look out for the distinctive yellow line.
