Perth Airport Line Grand Opening

Ferro-Clean provided professional corrosion resistance by painting anti-slip protective coatings for the Perth Airport Metronet Train Tunnel

Perth Airport Line Grand Opening

The METRONET Airport Line is officially open with the first scheduled train pulling out of High Wycombe Station this morning. The $1.86 billion project – part of METRONET – was jointly funded $490 million by the Commonwealth and $1.37 billion by the Western Australian State Government. The new Airport Line adds 8.5km to Perth’s rail network, and travels underneath the Swan River and Perth Airport, reaching around 27 metres below ground at its deepest point.

It is the first new train line to be introduced into the network since the opening of the Mandurah Line in 2007. There are expected to be about 20,000 daily trips along the new line in its first year, with trains stopping at all stations between High Wycombe and Claremont. Trains on the Airport Line will operate every 12 minutes in peak, every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes at night. To view the Airport Line timetable, visit the Transperth website – Airport Line (transperth.wa.gov.au).

Ferro-Clean has been involved in the train tunnel project, providing high quality, custom solutions to provide safety products that stand out – 9000 walkway panels with a non-slip finish incorporated into the protective coatings.

This walkway is to be used by passengers and crew if the train needs to stop mid-way through the tunnel in an emergency. Ferro-Clean developed an innovative solution to apply the non-slip material and protective coatings with great consistency, which incorporated a painted yellow reflective strip on the edge facing the rails. The anti-slip material ensures people will not slip off the platform, the yellow line highlights the edge of the panels, and the protective coatings assure a long lifespan and protect them from the elements.

The 9000 panels were completed on schedule to the client’s specifications – thanks to Ferro-Clean. When you travel through the Perth Airport Tunnel, be sure to look for the yellow line!
